Georgia bank fraud charges go to federal court

Seven people have been indicted in a bank fraud scandal that cost the FDIC over $90 million. The fraud charges stem from the bank employees, including its president and CEO, falsifying documents, illegally loaning money to accrue interest payments, and involving other banks in fraudulent deals to cover losses incurred.

Unruly passenger on Atlanta flight lands federal charge

As we detailed in our previous post, interfering with an aircraft crew is, in fact, a federal crime. Earlier this month, a Hogansville, Georgia, man pled guilty to one count of the federal offense after acting as an unruly passenger on an Oct. 10, 2012 flight.

Embezzlement convictions for cashing someone else's tax returns

Elected county sheriff calls himself crime fighter facing charges

A Clayton County, Georgia, sheriff who won election by calling himself a crime fighter is facing criminal charges of his own. The newly elected sheriff took the oath of office and started his job even though he is facing 32 felony counts, which include racketeering and theft charges. Whether he will continue to be allowed to serve as sheriff while the charges remain unresolved is not entirely certain at this point. His trial was delayed after prosecutors appealed a judge's decision to dismiss five of the 37 original charges.
